THE WORLD'S 1O MOST HONEST CITIES?

Would you keep a mobile phone or a wallet if you found one or hand it in to the local police station?  Reader's Digest wanted to know.

They randomly chose some of the world's cities and deliberately "lost" 30 mobile phones in each of them.  Then they advised the nearest police stations and waited for a call from the finder.

They then put together a list of the world's top ten honest cities.  We highlight the winners below in order of merit.

1. Ljubljana, Slovenia
The capital of Slovenia was the surprising winner of the test. Many stories in the press concentrate on the less honest and unattractive aspects of Eastern Europe but 29 out of 30 cell phones were returned to their rightful owner.

2. Toronto, Canada
Canada's largest city should be proud of its inhabitants where 28 out of 30 phones were returned. This should not be any surprise really as Canada has, for many years, ranked highly in surveys of life quality and contentedness of the population.

3. Seoul, South Korea
South Korea has to be one of the world's leading countries in gadgets and the latest technology. Maybe our latest mobiles were "old hat" for the Koreans as 27 out of 30 were returned. Could it be that the missing three were retained by tourists?

4. Stockholm, Sweden
The first North European city on the list, Stockholm ranked fourth which may come as a disappointment as the city has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Four phones went missing.

5. Mumbai, India (Joint 5th Position)
Mumbai has a lot to be proud of considering the dense population of this rapidly growing city. With 60% of Mumbai's population living in slums, this is proof that poverty does not lead to dishonesty. Only six phones lost.

5. Manila, the Philippines (Joint 5th Position)
Another Asian surprise! The second most populated city of Philippines shares the fifth rank with Mumbai and New York. Only 6 phones went missing.

5. New York, USA (Joint 5th Position)
Not bad for New York considering the number of inhabitants and tourists, combined with the absolute anonymity one has in the 'Big Apple'. 6 phones went AWOL.

8. Helsinki, Finland (Joint 8th Position)
Helsinki is the second Scandinavian representative, proving that it is a safe choice for the World Design Capital in 2012 with 7 phones going missing.

8. Budapest, Hungary (Joint 8th Position)
Budapest, the capital of Hungary and ranked third in an Emerging Markets Index of 2008, attracts over 20 million tourists every year and should be proud of its place in the survey.

8. Warsaw, Poland (Joint 8th Position)
Despite being razed to the ground during the Second World War, our seventh capital in the top 10 has a thriving economy and hardiness to make it to the top ten.

Are you surprised by that list?  Are there any conclusions you could draw, other than those mentioned?  Wouldn't you like to know which the most dishonest cities were, the bottom 10?!  I wonder if London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast were included, where would they stand?

“STREET PASTORS” IN BANGOR

Several Bangor Churches have agreed to support the introduction of “Street Pastors” to Bangor.  Discussions with the Police and Gwynedd council received a favourable response.  Street Pastors willing to commit to 12 days training and 12 nights duty per annum are now being recruited.  A co-ordinator is also needed, willing to devote about two days a week to the task.

15 YEARS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

“The last 15 years have changed our world for ever,” claims Tony Whittaker, co-ordinator of Internet Evangelism Day. “Digital media are transforming the way we communicate, behave and even think. If Facebook was a country, it would have the fourth largest population in the world.”

Internet Evangelism Day is a strategic resource to help the worldwide church understand these issues and use the Web to share the good news. It is both a year-round online guide and an annual focus day - to be held this year on Sunday 25 April.

Churches are encouraged to use Internet Evangelism Day resources to create a presentation for their members on or near that Sunday (or at any other time they choose). The IE Day site offers free downloads: PowerPoint, video clips, handouts, drama scripts, music and posters. These enable any church (or homegroup, college, or conference) to build a customized program, lasting from five minutes to fifty.

2010’s focus day will be the sixth to be used by churches around the world since the initiative’s launch in 2005. Over this period, digital media have developed dramatically, with the advent of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and the growing use of mobile phones to access online services.
The outreach opportunities have multiplied too.

IE Day’s website is also a one-stop resource covering many subjects, including how to build a church website that is ‘outsider friendly’, using Twitter in evangelism, and blogging. Perhaps surprisingly, you do not need to be technical to share your faith online. And you can volunteer to be an email mentor to inquirers with several large online outreach ministries.

Internet Evangelism Day is an initiative of the Internet Evangelism Coalition, based at the Billy Graham Center, Wheaton, Illinois. It is supported by a wide range of leaders and groups. “I am glad to commend Internet Evangelism Day,” says John Stott.

COFFEE CUP POLITICS  -  ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN POLITICS MADE SIMPLE

What happens when a fly falls into a coffee cup?

The Italian throws the cup and walks away in a fit of rage

The Frenchman takes out the fly, and drinks the coffee

The Chinese eats the fly and throws away the coffee

The Russian drinks the coffee with the fly, since it was extra with no charge

The Israeli sells the coffee to the Frenchman, the fly to the Chinese, buys himself a new cup of coffee and uses the extra money to invent a device that
prevents flies from falling into coffee

The Palestinian blames the Israeli for the fly falling in his coffee, protests the act of aggression to the UN, takes a loan from the European Union to buy a new cup of coffee, uses the money to purchase explosives and then blows up the coffee house where the Italian, the Frenchman, the Chinese, and the Russian are all trying to explain to the Israeli that he should give away his cup of coffee to the Palestinian

BEACON BOOKS, LLANDUDNO

Beacon Books is now registered as part of the Crown Books retail chain.  This means that if you go to www.crownbooks.co.uk, click on "Store Finder"
then "Beacon Books Llandudno", then "Click here to register" and enter your details, then they will receive a percentage of anything you purchase through
this website. It is also a good way of searching for a particular book, knowing that they can normally have it in stock within 24 hours if ordered before 3.30 Monday to Thursday
Obviously they would prefer you pick up the phone, or visit and get it directly from them, but if that is not possible then for those items you are desperately in need of, this is an excellent alternative
Your continued commitment will be greatly appreciated

ALIVE AND KICKING ABORTION CAMPAIGN AND PETITION LAUNCHED

The Alive and Kicking Alliance launched its campaign on abortion with a fully updated website at:
www.aliveandkickingcampaign.org

Alive and Kicking brings together eleven organisations including Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship, Christian Medical Fellowship, ProLife Alliance, Maranatha, CARE, LIFE, and the Evangelical Alliance
With The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill about to be debated in the House of Commons, the Alliance aims are:
* A substantial lowering of the upper limit of 24 weeks for abortion
* An end to discriminatory abortion up until birth for disabled babies
* Fully informed consent for women contemplating abortion
The main features of the campaign are:
* An online data base of MPs past voting record and current voting intentions on abortion:
www.aliveandkickingcampaign.org/mp/searchmp.php

* A petition calling for reform of the abortion law aimed at gaining 100,000 signatures:
www.aliveandkickingcampaign.org/petition

* An online information pack for people to use in lobbying MPs:
www.aliveandkickingcampaign.org/public/pdf/aaklobbypack.pdf

Please do let people know about the campaign and in particular encourage them to:
* Sign the petition and print off a downloaded version for people in churches to sign and post in
www.aliveandkickingcampaign.org/public/pdf/petition.pdf

* Let us know their MPs voting intentions
voting@aliveandkickingcampaign.org

Targeting MPs Views on Abortion and Action Pack
As mentioned above, by using the database you can select your MP (by entering your postcode) and find out where they stand on abortion. There are some MPs whose opinions on abortion we do not know. If your MP is one of them please write or visit their surgery asking them specifically where they stand on abortion, and let us know their response. Please forward MPs’ responses to

voting@aliveandkickingcampaign.org

or 020 7407 6157
Note the majority MPs hold (how many votes they won their seat by in the last election), which you can find on the MPs’ database on the Alive and Kicking website. If they have a small majority work with the churches in your constituency to lobby your MP to represent your views on abortion in Parliament. If the number of Christians lobbying an MP is higher than the majority they hold, this may persuade them to represent your view in Parliament rather than lose their seat at the next election! You can lobby your MP using the Alive and Kicking Action Pack.

Alive and Kicking Alliance includes CARE, Christian Medical Fellowship, CORE, Evangelical Alliance, Guild of Catholic Doctors, Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship, LIFE, Maranatha, Prolife Alliance, Real Choice, Student Life Net.

'MYSTERY WORSHIPPERS' TEST CHURCH

'Mystery worshippers' secretly visiting Shropshire churches have praised them for their sermons and warm welcomes.  The 13 inspectors, normally paid to visit shops posing as ordinary shoppers, said they were genuinely surprised by their visits.  Churches in Telford and Oswestry scored between 90 and 100% in tests, according to Heart of England Christian Resources Exhibition.  The aim of the test was to find out how churches could meet people's needs.  Mystery worshipper Mike Sadler, who lives in Telford, said although he does not go to church it was interesting to see how things have changed over the years.  Benita Hewitt, from the Christian Research Association which organised the study, said: 'Although the churches in Telford were given no advance warning, several scored more than 90%, with two achieving 100%.  Most of our mystery worshippers were genuinely surprised by the warmth of their experience in church and some were even keen to go back for more.'

Praise: God that when He is worshiped He will draw all men unto Him. (John12:32)

"WHO IS THIS GOD?" -  EVANGELISTIC BOOKLET AND CD FROM THE NATIONWIDE CHRISTIAN TRUST

We have just produced a booklet entitled "Who is this God?" designed to help people understand the Christian view of who God is and what He is like. In this post modern age, people are bombarded with so many different perspectives of spirituality, yet often have very little understanding of the unique Christian view. This resource helps address this enabling people to really understand. There is also a multi-format cd available which presents the same concepts but using both audio and visual formats.
Individual copies of either cost just £1.95 and there are very substantial discounts available for bulk orders. (e.g. £75 for 100)
What's more the booklets can be personalised to include details of your church with logos, service information etc. With Christmas fast approaching this could be a great resource to give to visitors to your Christmas services, or what about using it during HOPE 08?

For more information call 0845 050 4566 or visit our website: www.nationwidechristiantrust.com

"The tragedy of this late hour is that we have too many dead men in the pulpits giving out too many dead sermons to too many dead people.  Oh! the horror of it..."

Preaching without unction kills instead of giving life...  The Word does not live unless the unction is upon the preacher.  Preacher, with all thy getting - get unction...
Preaching is a spiritual business.  A sermon born in the head reaches the head; a sermon born in the heart reaches the heart.  Under God, a spiritual preacher will produce spiritually minded people...
Unction cannot be learned, only earned - by prayer...  Victory is not won in the pulpit by firing intellectual bullets... but in the prayer closet; it is won or lost before the preacher's foot enters the pulpit...
When the hammer of logic and the fire of human zeal fail to open the stony heart, unction will succeed."

"No man is greater than his prayer life...
The pulpit can be a shop-window to display one's talents, the prayer closet allows no showing off...

The pastor who is not praying, is playing; the people who are not praying, are straying...

We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters.

Failing here (i.e. in the place of prayer), we fail everywhere...
The ministry of prayer - the highest ministry of all human offices - is open to all...

To be much for God, we must be much with God...
The secret of praying is praying in secret.

A sinning man will stop praying, and a praying man will stop sinning.

We are beggared and bankrupt, but not broken, not even bent.
Prayer is to the believer what capital is to the businessman...
For this kind of prayer, there is no substitute. We do it - or die!
He who kneels before God will stand in any situation...

There are no reduced rates for revolution of soul...

This sin-swamped world calls for unction in the pulpit and action in the pew!
My reader, because the Church has lost Holy Ghost fire, men go to hell-fire!"

'Why revival tarries' by Leonard Ravenhill

"When God intends great mercy for His people, the first thing He does is set them a-praying".
Matthew Henry

"When we go to God by prayer, the devil knows we go to fetch strength against him, and therefore he opposeth us all he can".
R. Sibbles
